Meet Jambi

This term we have been Diving into 'Running Wild' by Michael Morpurgo a story about a young boy who travels with his mother to Indonesia.  But this isn’t just a holiday. It’s an escape, a new start, a chance to put things behind them - things like the death of Will’s father. And to begin with, it seems to be just what they both needed. But then Oona, the elephant Will is riding on the beach, begins acting strangely, shying away from the sea. And that’s when the tsunami comes crashing in, and Oona begins to run. Except that when the tsunami is gone, Oona just keeps on running. With nothing on his back but a shirt and nothing to sustain him but a bottle of water, Will must learn to survive deep in the jungle. Luckily, though, he’s not completely alone... He’s got Oona.


This story has really captured our imagination.  Through reading this novel we have learned about all the different animals that live in the Sumatran Rainforest and how their survival is threatened by humans. As a class we were saddened to learn that the Sumatran Tiger mentioned in the story is critically endangered.  We decided as a class that we wanted to Adopt an animal from the Sumatran Rainforest.  We were thrilled to find out the Edinburgh Zoo has its very own Sumatran Tiger - Jambi.


Mrs Stefanatos, Mrs Sime, Mr Burges and Miss Brown have kindly gifted us Jambi's adoption for a year.  As Silver members our name 'Houston Primary School' will be on Jambi's enclosure, and we also have two tickets to Edinburgh Zoo to give away! 


We are currently creating fact files all about the Sumatran Tiger and the best fact file will win the tickets.  The winning fact file will also be displayed on our Blog so we can all learn about Jambi and how to support his survival.
